Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO Hosts Convening and Call to Action for Workers with Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

08.19.26

This month, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO hosted a convening and call to action in support of workers with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in response to the United States Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision allowing the Trump administration to terminate TPS for Haitian and Syrian nationals, as well as to the announcement from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that TPS holders from certain countries are no longer eligible to work in the United States of America.

The convening began with remarks from LA County Federation of Labor President Yvonne Wheeler and Service Workers International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW) President David Huerta.

“The labor movement has always stood on the side of justice, fairness, and human dignity. We will continue to stand in unwavering solidarity with our immigrant sisters, brothers, siblings, and every TPS holder facing uncertainty. We will continue to demand humane immigration policies, an end to fear-based enforcement, and a meaningful pathway to citizenship because we know that our strength comes from our unity,” said LA Fed President Yvonne Wheeler. “In this critical moment, education, organizing, and collective action are more important than ever.”

The panel featured immigration and civil rights attorneys as well as experts from various immigration rights organizations. They shared legal updates and highlighted resources for TPS holders and unions with affected members.

The convening closed with a call to action from LA Fed Organizing Director Patricia Recinos for union members to continue educating members about their rights on the job, followed by closing remarks from LA/OC Building Trades Council Executive Secretary Ernesto Medrano.

The LA Fed has compiled a list of resources and information for TPS holders and unions to support their members. Visit https://thelafed.org/resource/tps-workplace-resources/ for more information.
