Los Angeles County Federation of Labor Hosts California Gubernatorial Candidate Xavier Becerra

The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor welcomed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra to Laborers Local 300 on Tuesday morning, where labor leaders from across Southern California gathered for an inspiring breakfast focused on the future of California’s working families.

The event brought together union leaders representing hundreds of thousands of workers, alongside elected officials including Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, underscoring the labor movement’s shared commitment to advancing an agenda rooted in economic justice, worker empowerment, and opportunity for all Californians.

Drawing on his personal story, Becerra reflected on working alongside his father, a proud member of Laborers Local 185, an experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to public service and the labor movement.

“California will have a union member in the Governor’s office,” Becerra told attendees.

Throughout his remarks, Becerra emphasized strengthening collective bargaining rights, protecting workers from exploitation, ensuring responsible regulation of artificial intelligence in the workplace, and guaranteeing that workers continue to have a meaningful voice in shaping California’s economy.

“This gathering reflected the strength, unity, and determination of the Los Angeles labor movement,” said Yvonne Wheeler, President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. “It was an opportunity to hear directly from one of our own—a lifelong champion for working families, unions, and economic justice—as he shared a bold vision for California’s future. Working people deserve leaders who understand their struggles because they have lived them, and Xavier Becerra has never forgotten where he came from.”

State Senator Maria Elena Durazo highlighted Becerra’s decades-long record of standing with immigrant communities and working families.

“Xavier has a long and proud record of defending the rights of immigrants, standing up to protect DACA recipients, and ensuring that California remains a beacon of opportunity for all,” Durazo said. “He stood up to Donald Trump as California’s Attorney General, and he will continue standing up for Californians as our next Governor.”

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the importance of labor’s role in shaping California’s future.

“As Long Beach goes, so goes California. We are a proud labor city built by working families who keep our economy moving every single day,” Richardson said. “I’m proud to stand with the Los Angeles County labor movement in supporting Xavier Becerra because he understands that protecting workers means protecting California’s future.”

David Green, President and Executive Director of SEIU Local 721, underscored the importance of the upcoming election for working families.

“Working people continue to face rising costs, economic uncertainty, and attacks on workers’ rights,” Green said. “The stakes could not be higher. This gathering was more than breakfast—it was a call to action for the labor movement to unite behind a leader who shares our values and will fight every day for California’s working families.”

David Huerta, President of SEIU-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW), praised Becerra’s unwavering commitment to frontline workers.

“Throughout his career, Xavier Becerra has kept essential workers, janitors, security officers, airport workers, stadium workers, and event workers at the center of his agenda,” Huerta said. “This November, we’re fighting for Xavier because he has always fought for California’s working families.”

The breakfast concluded with renewed energy and a shared commitment to organizing, mobilizing, and building the broad coalition necessary to elect leaders who will continue advancing policies that create family-sustaining jobs, strengthen unions, protect immigrant communities, expand economic opportunity, and ensure every Californian has the opportunity to thrive.

“As we look toward November, the labor movement stands ready to organize, educate, and mobilize working people across California,” Wheeler said. “When working people unite around a common purpose, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Together, we will build a California where every worker has dignity, every family has opportunity, and every voice is heard.”
