The People’s Project Gives Power to the People
The People’s Project partnered with the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU) and The LA Fed to demand dignified living conditions for the tenants of View Pointe Apartments this past December with a March to the headquarter offices of the parent company, JK Residential Services. However, this march came after years of horrible living conditions and months of organizing with our very own, The People’s Project.
Before our organizers at The People’s Project got involved, the View Pointe tenants were experiencing living conditions that included leaky roofs, mold, mildew, and pest infestations. To add insult to injury, the landlord then decided to increase rent prices despite the aforementioned living conditions and rising unemployment due to the national pandemic. Cue The People’s Project.
Our organizers went in and surveyed the building to identify and expose these unjust living conditions. Then, we brought in our siblings at LATU to assist with the legal services and organizing actions that included writing a letter to the parent company signed by all of the building’s tenants that outlined their concerns. But most importantly, we worked with the tenants by educating them on their rights via weekly meetings and empowering them to take action.
The march to JK Residential Services is only the beginning. Since the start of the new year, our organizers continue to support View Pointe tenants in their organizing efforts until they get the dignified housing they deserve.
