LA Labor Movement Stands United in Demanding the Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

04.22.25

Labor leaders and union members from across Los Angeles County, joined by a few members of Congress and Los Angeles City Council members, rallied in Downtown Los Angeles, demanding that the Trump Administration return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the United States.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an International Association of Sheet, Metal, Air, Rail Transportation Workers (SMART) apprentice, who hasn’t been charged or convicted of any crime, has been unlawfully detained without due process in El Salvador. In defiance of multiple court orders, including from the United States Supreme Court, the Trump administration refuses to comply and bring Kilmar back.

“Kilmar is one of us; he’s not just a headline…he’s a hard-working sheet metal worker who signed up for our apprenticeship program because he believes in the value of hard work and believes in the American dream,” said SMART Local 105 President and Business Manager Steve Hinson.

“This is beyond unacceptable,” said LA Fed President Yvonne Wheeler, “The Trump Administration is not above the law, and they are certainly not above the United States Supreme Court. Our labor movement is united in loudly demanding- Bring our Brother Kilmar home.”

“The authors of our Constitution should be rolling in their graves,” said Executive Secretary of the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades Council, Ernesto Medrano, “this action, plain and simple, is totally un-American. Bring our Brother home!”
