LA County Federation of Labor President Yvonne Wheeler released the following statement:
LOS ANGELES — Today, justice has prevailed. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced its intent to dismiss the charges against David Huerta, SEIU-United Service Workers West President and a member of the LA County Federation of Labor Executive Board.
On June 6 of last year, federal agents were sent to kidnap garment workers at their jobsite in downtown LA. David saw the call and, as part of LA’s Rapid Response Network, mobilized to help. He was later arrested for peacefully protesting outside an ICE operation, exercising rights protected by the First Amendment.
Today’s announcement underscores what we’ve long known: David’s arrest and charges are a disturbing example of how this administration continues to weaponize the Justice Department to suppress dissent.
The labor movement has always stood on the side of justice, fairness, and human dignity. We will continue to stand in unwavering solidarity with our immigrant sisters, brothers, and siblings facing uncertainty. We will continue to demand humane immigration policies, an end to fear-based enforcement, and a meaningful pathway to citizenship because we know that our strength comes from our unity.
Solidarity is stronger than suppression and working people will not be divided.
