LA County Supervisors Vote Tomorrow on Two COVID-19 Worker Protections

01.04.21

As we enter the new year, the reality of the COVID-19 is becoming more apparent by the day. The numbers of cases are skyrocketing and many of our hospitals are now at full capacity, no longer able to take patients.  On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported over 12,000 new cases and 91 new deaths due to COVID-19. As we all know, essential workers have taken the brunt of the pandemic and need more support.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote on TWO crucial policies tomorrow that will bring much needed help to working families by expanding supplemental sick day benefits to all workers and providing Hero Pay to our frontline grocery and drug retail workers. We need your help!

SAMPLE STATEMENTS:

59-B (Hero Pay for Frontline Grocery & Drug Retail Workers.)

My name is [insert name] and I’m with [insert your organization, union, or business]. I live and work in Los Angeles County.

Just a few days into the new year, we are experiencing a terrifying surge in COVID-19 cases resulting in thousands of deaths and putting the lives of our frontline workers and their families in danger. Throughout the pandemic, our grocery and drug retail workers have been on the frontlines providing us the food and medicine we need. Even as demand grew with business closures, these heroes put themselves on the line to keep our communities going.

I urge the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to support these workers and pass Hero Pay for frontline grocery and drug retail workers as submitted by Supervisors Solis and Mitchell.

59-C (Extending Paid Sick Leave)

My name is [insert name] and I’m with [insert your organization, union, or business]. I live and work in Los Angeles County.

Just a few days into the new year, are experiencing a terrifying surge in COVID-19 cases resulting in more closures, loss of jobs, and thousands of deaths. We are worse off now than we were in the beginning of the pandemic with workers taking the brunt of the pandemic.

The LA County Board of Supervisors must prioritize the public health and lives of our workers by extending the Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Ordinance Recommendation as submitted by Supervisor Solis.  No worker should be forced to choose between putting food on the table or coming into work sick during a pandemic.
