Los Angeles, California – April 20, 2020: Snake River Farms, a brand owned by Agri Beef Co headquartered in Boise, Idaho and Newport Meat Southern California, a Sysco company, have donated 35,000 premium American Wagyu steaks to the LA Regional Foodbank in partnership with the LA County Federation of Labor Foundation. These donations will contribute immediate relief for unemployed restaurant workers and other families in our community affected most by the ongoing pandemic.
“There’s only one way we’ll get through this crisis — together,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Hospitality workers are making extraordinary sacrifices right now, and we’re grateful for the spirit of caring and community that Snake River Farms and Newport Meat are showing with this generous donation.”
Ron Herrera, Executive Secretary of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said, “We have seen entire industries decimated by the COVID-19 crisis, with working people, especially hospitality workers, bearing the brunt. But instead of hiding in fear, the people of Los Angeles, our communities, have stood in solidarity to get us through these trying times. The working families of Los Angeles thank Snake River Farms and Newport Meat for their incredible generosity and for standing with us.”
“At Snake River Farms we are a family business. From our ranchers to our distributor partners, we are all in this together. We are firm believers that in times of crisis, food can bring comfort and healing. While we are hundreds of miles away, we care deeply about these restaurant workers, their families, and the affected communities in California that are having a tough time and want them to know how much they mean to us,” said Jay Theiler, Executive Director of Marketing at Snake River Farms.
The Snake River Farms premium, American Wagyu steaks, known for their extensive marbling from cattle raised on family farms and ranches throughout the Pacific Northwest will be expertly cut and individually packed by Newport Meats’ skilled butchers.
“We are all witnessing the devastating effects of COVID-19; especially the toll it is taking on the foodservice industry and its workers. So, when Snake River Farms approached us about wanting to partner on a large-scale donation, we didn’t hesitate to jump on board. We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help express thanks and give back to our industry during these difficult times,” said Denise Van Voorhis, President, Newport Meat Southern California.
Newport Meat will deliver the steaks to the LA Regional Foodbank on April 20th. Distribution will take place at food pantries throughout Los Angeles in partnership with the LA County Federation of Labor Foundation and in collaboration with UNITE HERE Local 11, the hospitality union of Los Angeles county.
To date, the LA County Federation of Labor, Labor Community Services, and the LA Food Bank have collaborated on 15 food banks across the region, distributing food to over 25,000 families, and over 100,000 individuals. Through this program 6 distributions are planned through May 1.
“Due to the increased need in our community, food is currently going out faster than it is coming in,” stated Michael Flood, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. “This donation of steak will help provide a much-needed source of protein to residents of our community who are seeking food assistance during this challenging time.”
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has experienced a 73% increase in food distribution since the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis, and March 2020 set a new record with nearly 8 million pounds of food and product distributed, the equivalent of more than 6.6 million meals, to Food Bank partner agencies and through direct distributions.
