Los Angeles, CA – The following statement was issued by Rusty Hicks, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, following the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor’s endorsements of Maria Elena Durazo for State Senate District 24 and Wendy Carrillo for State Assembly District 51:
“On behalf of the 800,000 hardworking women and men throughout the County of Los Angeles, we’re proud to endorse Maria Elena Durazo for State Senate District 24 and Wendy Carrillo for State Assembly District 51, two fearless women who have shown exceptional leadership in making our state one of opportunity and inclusion.
“Maria Elena Durazo, the first woman to head the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and now the Vice President for Immigration, Civil Rights and Diversity of UNITE HERE, has dedicated her entire life to activism and lifting up the voices of immigrant workers. She won affordable health care for thousands of families and led her union to stand for marriage equality, raise the minimum wage, and against President Trump’s assault on immigrants. She brings people together and empowers the most vulnerable to be leaders in their communities.
“Wendy Carrillo has stood with workers to bring the California Dream within reach of families by fighting for a $15 wage, cracking down on wage theft and discrimination, and working to achieve civil rights for the LGBTQ community, among other progressive initiatives. Together, we fought to make California the nation’s leader in expanding affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act. With coverage for millions of families under attack from President Trump, we can count on Wendy to defend and expand California’s progress in achieving health care for all.
“Los Angeles’ working people are ready to talk to voters and deliver the message that Maria Elena and Wendy are the progressive champions we need for California.”
