Data Specialist



The Data Specialist is assigned to provide services for the officers, staff and members on a citywide basis. The Data Specialist is responsible to the Strategic Research Director.


A. Extract insights from complex data sets to make appropriate strategic recommendations.

B. Acquire data from primary or secondary resources and maintain databases/data analysis systems

C. Write SQL queries and create reports

D. Match records from one source with records from a different source without a clear primary key

E. Collect and analyze information available to support UTLA campaigns, including member information and external regulator information

F. Lead and manage efforts to implement quality control systems, troubleshoot data errors (both entry and transmission), report regularly on data quality control efforts, and design, implement, and execute improvements to existing data systems

G. Monitor and maintain a database of pertinent information that is relevant for bargaining, organizing and preservation of the tenets of UTLA.

H. Work across departments and projects, clearly communicating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

I. Research best practices in data management and field technical operations. Share, report, and consider application of relevant new developments.

J. Perform other duties as assigned by the Strategic Research Director.


A. Demonstrated quantitative and analytic skills as well as familiarity with public and private data sources.

B. Extensive experience with at least one of the following languages: SQL, Python, R

C. Experience applying statistical techniques in a real world/outcome driven environment a plus

D. Strong proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and other analytical and presentation tools, including the ability to create graphs, presentations and reports.

E. Must work well with a team and work with diverse groups of people

F. Comprehensive communication skills for oral, written, and visual presentations.

G. Completion of an undergraduate degree, preferably with a degree in a quantitative field; or equivalent relevant experience

H. Ability to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines, coordinate complex activities, prioritize conflicting demands, take initiative on projects, and work independently. “Can-do” attitude.

I. Prior work experience in a union environment is a plus.

J. Interest in and commitment to progressive social change.


Starting salary range $79,113 – 89,113, depending on related experience.
